VotingIf you are resident in the Marbella district and have registered with your local Town Hall, you can have the right to vote in the local elections. Voting gives you the opportunity to make your voice heard and is important if you want to make a difference in your local community.

The council have tried to make it as easy as possible for foreign residents to be involved by offering the option to vote by mail as well as in person.

Please note, your name must be included on the municipal census and you need to be properly registered in order to vote. To make sure you can, visit the registration office (“Departamento de Padrón”) from the Town Hall. If you want some help the local foreigners’ departments are really good and have English speaking staff. Click here to find the contact details for the Departamento de Extranjeros nearest to you.

Below are the instructions for voting from the Marbella Foreigners’ Department. (Please excuse their slightly strange English – at least they’re trying)

Vote by Mail by electors resident in Spain, requested from Spain

Voters resident in Spain can apply to vote by mail by completing a form available at any post office in Spain sent to the Provincial Delegation of the Electoral Census Office of the province of registration. Voters must sign the application and check the official post office puts the date and the corresponding label.

Voters who apply for a postal vote cannot vote in person at the polling station.

The Provincial Delegation of the corresponding Electoral Census Bureau will then send, by certified mail, the necessary documentation so that you can cast your vote. Once documentation is received and completed, voters should send their vote to the polling also by certified mail.

Vote by Mail by electors resident in Spain who are temporarily abroad

Voters resident in Spain who are temporarily abroad wishing to participate in the election may apply to vote by mail. They should be registered at the “Matricula Consular” as non-residents and request documentation to exercise their right to vote from abroad to the corresponding Provincial Delegation of the Electoral Census Office. Application must be submitted in person at the consular post or embassy consular section.

The Provincial Delegation of the corresponding Electoral Census Bureau will then send, by certified mail, the necessary documentation so that you can cast your vote. Once documentation is received and completed, voters should send their vote to the polling also by certified mail.
