There are promising signs that 2010 is going to be a better year for owners of holiday homes and tourism driven industries in Spain. Europe’s statistics agency Eurostat revealed that January’s figures showed a 1.1% increase in foreign tourist arrivals compared to the same period of 2009. This may not be a big increase, but is significant as it follows an 18 month decline in visitors and hopefully will set a pattern for further increases this year.

On the ground it certainly feels like the tourists are still visiting. Thankfully the sun finally came out and shone throughout the Easter holiday, much to the relief of all the residents and visitors. Over the Semana Santa holiday, beaches, bars and restaurants were buzzing with people enjoying the spring sunshine and spending money, which is what the area needs.

It is interesting to see that visitors from France, Italy, Belgium and Switzerland are up, whilst British and German visitors are decreasing. Traditionally Britain has provided the most tourists for this area, but there has been a significant decline of more than 8% from this region. This shows us that to keep rental occupancy high we need to broaden our horizons and make sure there is effective marketing throughout Europe rather than simply focusing on the UK market.

In order to do this, we have joined forces with Novasol, Europe’s biggest holiday home rentals company. They have a strong presence in 21 countries throughout Europe. To promote their properties they use a network of 11 websites in different languages and 1.5 million catalogues distributed through over 15,000 travel agents. Our rental website HolidayRentalontheWeb also attracts a lot of traffic from British and English-speaking holiday makers, so together we can offer our homeowners access to a wide range of rental clients!
