As if Spain needed any further endorsement as a truly wonderful place to be in the world, Hollywood A-list star Gwyneth Paltrow recently named the country as one of her favourite places to live, adding how much she enjoys spending time here and even going so far as to call it “a second home.”
“It is so different from the United States,” she explained to American journalists. “It has a history, and the buildings are years and years and years old. In the United States an old building is about 17 (years old), and over there it’s from 500 B.C., it’s incredible.”
Paltrow continued, “They people seem to enjoy life a little bit more. They aren’t running around as much. They enjoy time with the family. They don’t always have their BlackBerry on.”
The Oscar-winning actress’ love affair with Spain has been well-documented.
She first traveled to Spain as a teenager, fell in love with the country, learnt the language and still embraces its culture, visiting at least once a year with husband Chris Martin (lead singer of the band Colplay) and making sure their young children, Apple and Moses, speak the language.
Spain is a passion she wants to share with more than just her family. She says she’d like to increase knowledge of the country across the whole of the United States too.
And to prove it, she recently hit the road on a gastronomic and cultural tour of the whole country with four great friends – Maria Batali, one of the best-known U.S. chefs, Spanish actress Claudia Bassols and gastronomy critic Mark Bittman – in a quest to better understand the country, its people and its delicious food.
The trip was filmed and turned into a television series entitled “Spain … on the Road Again” which is currently being shown on PBS in the United States, will start to be shown next week in Spain and, the producers hope, will also air in the UK and other countries in the near future.
Paltrow and company began their tour in the gorgeous medieval city of Toledo and journeyed through ten regions in Spain with the country rhythms of Willie Nelson and Spanish guitarist Antonio Carmona blasting out of their convertible Mercedes.
The four amigos learned about the country’s rich history and cultural heritage, sampling traditional foods and praising the virtues of Spain, its people and cuisine.
They also experienced some of the popular culture, as well as making some interesting stops, like the time they visited the leader of the musical group REM, Michael Stipe, a friend of Paltrow’s, in Barcelona.
Anyway, keep an eye out for the show and enjoy.
