Hola!

Well, Marbella was well and truly gripped with tennis fever this past weekend as Spain triumphed over Germany in the Davis Cup quater-finals.

It was a fantastically exciting event for the town to host – one more string to its bow after being elected European Sports City of 2009.

The Davis Cup organisers reported attendance was far in excess of their expectations. The streets around the Puerto Banus Bullring were closed off to traffic by police, and there was an electrifying atmosphere throughout the whole port area both before, during and after the matches that were played over the three day duration of the event.

After a close fought contest over the first two days, the scores were level at 2-2, and it all came down to the last match between Juan Carlos Ferrero  – who recently lost to Andy Murray at Wimbledon – and Germany’s Andreas Beck.

Ferrero, who was the No. 5 player on the squad, had not played Davis Cup since September 2005, when Spain beat Italy 3-2, thanks to his win over Daniele Bracciali 6-3, 6-0, 6-3.
Heproduced some heroic tennis to win the match 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 and give Spain an overall 3-2 victory.
Spain, the defending Davis Cup champions have now reached the semifinals of the international team competition for the second consecutive year, despite Spain playing without its talisman Rafael Nadal, who was unavailable due to knee tendonitis.
